What would you do on a saturday night in the cornfields of Iowa with an iffy weather forecast? Arts and crafts of course!
While Walmart might be great for your late night arts and crafts fix, remember that if you don’t buy name brand, you might get what you pay for.
We were able to satisfy our childish appetite, but Walmart ‘melty beads’ are no substitute for brand name Hama Beads.
Enjoy pictures of our creations. My favorite is the one in the picture to the right. What do you think it is?
I previously posted about Iowa City’s best Bloody Mary. Lisa’s 21st birthday and sense of adventure has led me to discover a new competitor to the best in Iowa City. Enter Atlas. With a slightly upscale ambiance and delectable lunch or dinner-time cuisine, it’s the perfect place to dine and/or grab a Bloody for an after-dinner desert. Their choice of Maytag Blue Cheese stuffed olives and BBQ sauce make a tangy fierce less-known competitor to the Deadwood’s signature sauce.
The strange part is, the recipes for these delightful treats aren’t nearly as closely gaurded as one might think.
So Lisa has set out on a quest to perfect the art of making a Bloody Mary. She’s been compiling knowledge from multiple experiences / tastings of Bloody Marys in the Iowa City area. The following is a list of the Bloodies we’ve tried so far:
Deadwood – (Grade: A) $5 – Served with Pimento stuffed olives and pickle.
Atlas – (Grade: A) $6 – Served with Maytag Blue Cheese stuffed olives.
Joe’s Place – (Grade: B) $5.50 – Served with a pickle.
Mickey’s – (Grade: C-) $5 – Served with pickle, celery, green olives.
Takanami – (Grade: B-) $8 – Serviced with Wasabi stuffed green olives.
While we’ll continue on our quest for the best institutional Bloody Mary, here’s a sampling of essential ingredients for Lisa’s Perfect Bloody Mary (Actual name TBD).
Vodka
Worcestershire Sauce
Celery Salt
Green Olives
Blue Cheese or Feta
Fresh Ground Pepper
Hot Sauce
Tomato Juice
Not all ingredients can be listed here as the actual recipe is a closely guarded secret, but these should get you started on a road to improving your Bloody making skills.

Best Bloody Mary in town? Deadwood. Atmosphere eclectic, service good, light low, and bar games a-plenty. Give it a taste, and if you don’t think it’s the best Bloody Mary around… well… you’re just wrong. :)
